Background and Aim: Parental perfectionism is among the factors that can significantly impact children’s mental health. Research indicates that parents’ excessive expectations and stringent standards are significantly associated with increased anxiety and depression among students. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the level of parental perfectionism and the degree of anxiety and depression among first-grade high school students in Bushehr, Iran.
Materials and Methods: The statistical population of this descriptive correlational study consisted of all first-grade high school students in Bushehr, Iran, during the 2025-26 academic year, from which 230 individuals were selected through multi-stage cluster sampling. Data were collected using the Beck Anxiety Inventory (1988), Beck Depression Inventory (1961), and Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (1990). The obtained data were then analyzed utilizing Pearson correlation analysis, regression, and SPSS software (version 26).
Results: The results showed a significant correlation between the level of parental perfectionism and the degree of anxiety and depression among students. Furthermore, the findings revealed that based on the R² value, anxiety and depression accounted for approximately 11% of the variance in perfectionism scores. According to the beta value, depression (Beta = 0.329) was the strongest predictor of parental perfectionism.
Conclusion: The study results demonstrate that parental perfectionism has a positive and significant relationship with increased levels of anxiety and depression among first-grade high school students in Bushehr, Iran. This finding underscores the necessity of focusing on family education and modifying parenting styles to promote adolescents’ mental health.
