Background and Aims: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between parenting stress and adolescents' behavioral problems, considering the mediating role of neuroticism.
Materials and Methods: This applied research study employed a descriptive-correlational design using structural equation modeling. The statistical population consisted of first-year high school students in Hamadan, Iran, and their parents during the 2025–2026 academic year. A total of 512 participants were selected using cluster sampling through schools. Data were collected using the Parental Educational Anxiety Questionnaire (2022), the Neuroticism Scale of the NEO Personality Inventory (1989), and Goodman’s Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (1997). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and structural equation modeling utilizing SPSS software (version 27) and LISREL.
Results: The results showed that parental stress had a significant positive effect on adolescents’ behavioral problems and that neuroticism significantly mediated the relationship between parental stress and adolescents’ behavioral problems (p < 0.001). The model fit indices also indicated a good fit between the conceptual model and the empirical data.
Conclusion: Based on the findings, neuroticism plays a significant mediating role in the relationship between parental stress and adolescents’ behavioral problems. These findings highlight the importance of developing psychological interventions for parents and adolescents to reduce parental stress, strengthen emotional self-regulation skills, and improve adolescents’ ability to manage negative emotions.
