Abstract
Introduction: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is characterized by impulsive behaviors and difficulties in attention and concentration in children, which can significantly affect their quality of life and that of their families. Counseling programs based on individual and family factors may help improve these challenges and enhance children's functioning.
Aim: The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a counseling program based on individual and family factors on impulsive behaviors and attention and concentration levels in children aged 7 to 9 years with ADHD in the city of Hamadan.
Method: This study was a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group and a two-month follow-up was conducted. The statistical population consisted of all children aged 7 to 9 years with ADHD who referred to counseling centers in Hamadan during the 2024–2025 academic year. Twenty-four children were selected through purposive sampling, considering inclusion and exclusion criteria, and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Participants completed the Barkley Children's Impulsivity Scale (2004) and the Bricken Attention Test (1962) at three stages: pretest, posttest, and follow-up. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and SPSS 23 software.
Results: Findings indicated that the counseling program based on individual and family factors significantly reduced impulsive behaviors and improved attention and concentration in children with ADHD (p < 0.001). Additionally, follow-up results confirmed the persistence of these effects (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: The counseling program based on individual and family factors effectively decreased impulsive behaviors and enhanced attention and concentration in children. It is recommended that such programs be incorporated into interventions aimed at reducing impulsivity and improving attentional performance in children with ADHD.
