Background and Aims: Conflicted couples are more likely to express negative emotions, which are then met with negative affect from the other partner. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of imagery-based couples therapy with that of Gottman couples therapy in improving emotional experience toward one’s spouse among couples experiencing marital conflict.
Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted using a quasi-experimental method with a pre-test-post-test design and a three-month follow-up with a control group. The statistical population of the study included couples referring to the Erfan Counseling Center in Tehran, Iran, during 2024. The sample size included 30 couples (10 couples in each group) who were selected using the available sampling method and randomly assigned to three groups. The Emotional Experience towards Spouse Questionnaire and the Revised Marital Conflict Questionnaire were the research instruments. The Imago group received eight 90-minute sessions, and the Gottman group received nine 90-minute sessions of intervention. Repeated measures analysis of variance was used to analyze the data.
Results: The results showed that both interventions had a significant effect on positive and negative emotions toward the spouse, compared to the control group (P<0.05), and there was no significant difference between the two experimental groups in this regard (P<0.05). Moreover, the pre-test mean values of both components were significantly different from the post-test and follow-up scores (P<0.05); however, there was no significant difference between the post-test and follow-up values (P<0.05).
Conclusion: The results showed that couples can benefit from both research interventions to improve the emotional experience of couples experiencing marital conflict.
