Introduction: The high prevalence of suicidal ideation (SI) among individuals with epilepsy necessitates the involvement of various disciplines to develop effective solutions for its reduction. One of the most cost-effective interventions is the establishment of online peer support groups (OPGs). These groups offer a supportive environment that fosters emotional well-being and enhances mental health outcomes among participants.
Aim: Comparison of SI in people with epilepsy, with and without membership in OPGs.
Method: The research employed a correlational and comparative design. The study group consisted of individuals with epilepsy who were members of OPGs, while the comparison group included those who were not members. The total sample size of 140 participants was determined using G*Power software. sampling was performed in the study group using snowball method, and in the control group, using convenience method. The Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire (Suicidal Ideation) was the instrument of this study.
Results: ANCOVA revealed significant differences in SI between group members and non-members. SI was significantly lower among members of OPGs. Of the two components of suicidal Ideation, thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness, only perceived burdensomeness was significant in this difference. Also, low income and the having seizures more than once a month, play a role in increasing SI in PWE.
Conclusion: The findings show that membership in OPGs can play a role in reducing the severity of suicidal Ideation in people with epilepsy by reducing the perception of burdensomeness.
