Background and Aims: Religious-spiritual struggles can be associated with increased adolescent vulnerability, as well as various psychological and functional consequences. This study aimed to predict suicidal ideation based on religious–spiritual struggles by examining the mediating role of problematic internet use in adolescents.
Materials and Methods: This study employed a descriptive‑correlational design based on structural equation modeling. The statistical population consisted of all adolescents aged 13 to 19 years residing in Urmia, Iran. Among them, 261 individuals were identified and selected as the research sample through schools using a multistage cluster sampling method. Data were collected using the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (Cull & Gill, 1982), the Religious and Spiritual Struggles Scale (Exline et al., 2014), and the Problematic Internet Use Questionnaire (Caplan, 2010). Data analyses were conducted in SPSS software (version 27) and AMOS (version 24).
Results: The findings showed the significant positive direct effects of religious‑spiritual struggles on suicidal ideation (β = 0.32, P<0.05) and problematic internet use (β = 0.73, P<0.05). Moreover, problematic internet use positively and directly predicted suicidal ideation (β = 0.19, P<0.05). Bootstrap results further confirmed the mediating role of problematic internet use in the relationship between religious‑spiritual struggles and suicidal ideation.
Conclusion: It is suggested that mental health professionals, when designing preventive interventions targeting adolescent well‑being, give special attention to the early detection and modification of religious‑spiritual struggles and maladaptive patterns of internet use.
