Despite the explosion over the past decades in interest in identity, a contested terrain in academic circles,Introduction: Despite the significant increase in interest in the topic of identity in recent decades, this research field, which has been addressed in various disciplines from psychology to sociology, has not yet been comprehensively defined and studied.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine the epistemological and methodological challenges researchers face in studying identity in the new millennium and to identify the obstacles and opportunities ahead for identity research.
Method: This study was conducted using an analytical-review method with a retrospective and archival approach. The sources used include credible scientific articles from international databases, analyzed through qualitative content analysis.
Findings: The findings indicate that researchers face a chain of interconnected challenges: definitional ambiguity leads to a lack of standardized measurement tools, which creates methodological dilemmas. Digital technologies and linguistic dynamics each add new layers of complexity. The dynamic nature of identity, theoretical ambiguities, and the impact of social networks and language on identity constitute the primary obstacles.
Conclusion: Understanding the complexities of identity requires interdisciplinary approaches and creative methodologies, including mixed methods research, digital ethnography, narrative analysis, and triangulation.
Keywords: Dynamic Identity, Identity Research, Language and Identity, Methodological Challenges, New Millennium, Online Networks.
