Despite the explosion over the past decades in interest in identity, a contested terrain in academic circles, this area of research, scattered across disciplines ranging from psychology to sociology, is not yet solidly defined and researched. The current review, thus, expounds the diverse issues faced by scholars in identity research in general and in the new millennium in particular. It focuses on epistemological issues with the nature of the concept of identity and methodological conundrums to technological advances that hover over identity research. It is discussed that academics need to take into account the new dynamics the modern technological platforms present including how identity is expressed and understood in the dominant online networking of the new millennium. The paper further discusses methodological obstacles related to data collection due to the various intersectional elements influencing identity and the significant role of language in developing and articulating it. As intricate nature of determining identity underscores the necessity for sophisticated techniques that take into account many viewpoints within interdisciplinary studies, we emphasize the urgent requirement for creative research methods including mixed methods research, digital ethnography, and story analysis that can adjust to and clarify the changing nature of identity by combining ideas from many scholarly sources. This review sums up with laying the groundwork for future research that might effectively address the complexities of identity in a more linked world.
