Introduction: Anxiety and depression have a reciprocal relationship with insomnia and cause sleep disruption. Additionally, insomnia exacerbates these disorders.
Objective: The present study was conducted with the aim of comparing the effectiveness of the Unified protocol for transdiagnostic treatment with mindfulness-based treatment on emotional symptoms in individuals with insomnia.
Method: The present study was conducted using a quasi-experimental method with a pre-test - post-test design and a 2-month follow-up in two groups. Based on voluntary sampling, first 32 individuals with insomnia who referred to psychiatric centers in Tehran in 2025 were selected, and then randomly assigned to research groups (each group 16 people) using block randomization. The first group received the Unified protocol for transdiagnostic treatment, and the second group received mindfulness-based treatment. The tools used included the 21-item Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. For data analysis, SPSS-25 statistical software and repeated measures analysis of variance were used.
Results: The results showed that there was a significant difference between the research stages in the transdiagnostic treatment group in terms of depression (F=32.14, P-value < 0.001) and anxiety (F=30.55, P-value < 0.001), and between the research stages in the mindfulness-based treatment group in terms of depression (F=5.72, P-value=0.008) and anxiety (F=8, P-value=0.002). In addition, there was a significant difference between the research groups in terms of depression (F=20.14, P-value < 0.001). However, there was no significant difference between them in terms of anxiety (F=3.76, P-value=0.062).
Conclusion: Therefore, it is suggested that mental health professionals, based on the individual conditions of clients, utilize transdiagnostic and mindfulness therapeutic methods to improve emotional symptoms associated with insomnia.
